President, Manager & Funeral Director

Email: angelo@calhounmania.com

Angelo G. Mania, CFSP,

Born in the City Paterson raised in Elmwood Park, NJ, as an adult moved Palisades Park then to Pompton Plains where with his wife Debra (Delle Chiaie), raised their two boys, Anthony & Matthew. Today they reside in the funeral home residence as has been customary since 1884.

Angelo began his involvement in the town of Rutherford in 1992 assisting with another funeral home in town, then settling in Collins Calhoun Funeral Home in 1996. Ten years later in 2006 Walter Calhoun Jr. transferred ownership and management and passed the torch of the then 129-year-old establishment to his trusted friend and employee Angelo G. Mania, CFSP (Academy Certified Funeral Service Practitioner) who by now has been part of the Collins-Calhoun “Family of Service” for 10 years. A year later, the name of the funeral home was changed to reflect the new ownership, Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, founded by John T. Collins in 1884 and oddly enough, this was only the third time that has happened in 140 years.

As President and Manager of the newly named firm Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, Angelo is applying all of his 30 plus years of experience and pledged to continue to build upon the "Family Owned" legacy, and always strive to improve the Funeral Home's long established 1884 position within its hometown of Rutherford and surrounding communities.

On a personal note, Angelo's passion is Flying! He is a Private Pilot and holds a single-engine, multi-engine, and instrument rating. He is a member of (AOPA) the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, (EAA) Experimental Aviation Association and NJ Aviation Association. He also enjoys playing his 59yr old Ludwig drum kit, the same kit his dad bought for him at the age of 15. He also has a collection of guitars, his favorite, a 1973 Les Paul Standard. He also is a true car aficionado, he can often be found under the hood of his 1966 Buick Wildcat Custom convertible that he purchased as young man in 1970 and his 1985 Corvette,

He never gets rid of anything!

After graduating from The American Academy McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science, NYC in 1974, he earned his New Jersey Funeral Directors license in 1975. Prior to that he attended Tombrock College, Bergen Community College, and before that Don Bosco Tech. High School.

Angelo's experience in funeral service began at 14 with his childhood friend Michael Della Torre, his best friend’s family-owned Della Torre funeral home in Paterson. After graduation from AAMI, he began his career with the Volk Funeral Homes a family-owned operation, with branches in Teaneck, Bogota, Palisades Park and Oradell, New Jersey.

After a short time in the Teaneck location, he was promoted to manager of their Palisades Park branch in 1976, at the age 26, was the youngest non-owner manager in the State of NJ.

As a manager, he handled all aspects of this business. During that time, he was appointed by the Palisades Park Mayor and Council to the Free Public Library Board. He also was one of the

Founding Members and Trustee of newly formed Palisades Park Homeowners Association, he also served as Past Pres. and Secretary of the Palisades Park UNICO and a member of the Palisades Park Knights of Columbus Council 3550 as a third-degree Knight.

In 1994 the Volk funeral homes were sold, resigning his position as manager, he was recruited and accepted a position as Vice President and general manager of Mayfair Investment Corp. located in Wayne, NJ, primarily to oversee its newly formed Funeral Home Acquisition Division. His role was primarily to develop a merger and acquisition formula that would position itself as a major influence in the large new funeral industry "merger craze" in early 1990's. In conjunction with this position, he also took charge of one of Mayfair's holdings; The Quirk-Lardier Funeral Homes with locations in Englewood, Tenafly, and Bergenfield, NJ. These funeral homes began to grow and prosper under Angelo's tutelage. However, without notice Mayfair Investment Corp. and their holdings were suddenly and abruptly dissolved along with the funeral home properties due to a serious legal impropriety of the President of the Mayfair Company. It was a wild ride! That man recently authored a book “The King of Con”

Angelo currently holds current memberships in The National Funeral Directors Association, New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, Bergen County Funeral Directors Association, The British Institute of Embalmers and the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice, The Funeral Directors Ethics Assoc.-Manual of Professional Practice, member of the Rutherford Chamber of Commerce, and also holds a position on the Board of Directors of The Kip Center, (an over 55 activity Center in Rutherford.)

Taking that all in, he and his wife Debra operate their small mom and pop funeral home in the same manner that they interact with their own personal family, with genuine care and working by the Golden Rule. We offer professional services with a very personal touch.
