Obituary for Anthony Nicholas Checki

Anthony Nicholas Checki, Rutherford passed away on Monday March 7, 2011. He was 87 years old.
He was born and raised in Lyndhurst. Anthony was the son of Nicholas and Rose (nee Baglive) Checki. His grandparents were Donata and Antonio Checki of Lyndhurst. He was predeceased by his brother Danny Checki and sister Laura Blasi. He graduated in 1947 from John Marshal College of Law now Seton Hall University with two certificates of law. He served during World War II in the united States Army as an artillery Cannoneer in the 35th Div. 216th Field Artillery regiment. His Division landed at Omaha Beach (Normandy) three days after D-Day June 1944. He fought in the "Battle of the Buldge led by General George Patton, The Battle of Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland receiving 5 battle stars. On September 26, 2006 Mr. Checki was decorated with the French Legion of Honor medal by Mr. Jean David Levitte, ambassador to the U.S. from the Republic of France naming him a Chevalier(Knight) of honor, the highest form of recognition bestowed by the President of the French Republic, Mr. Jacques Chirac, at Princeton, New Jersey Public Library.
Mr. Checki was employed as a Supervisor Manager by the State of New Jersey for 35 years, retiring in 1981.
Anthony was a member of the VFW Post 3549, Lyndhurst, NJ, Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, Simi Valley, California, Republican National Committee, Washington DC, 35th Division Association, Topeka, Kanas and former member of the Old Guard in Rutherford.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy (nee Strickland) Checki, his daughter Christine, grandson Nicholas and 2 great grandchildren.
He belonged to Church of St. Mary in Rutherford Funeral on Friday 9:00am with a 10:00am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Sacred Heart Church, Lyndhurst. Entombment: Holy Cross Mausoleum, North Arlington.
Family and Friends will be received on Thursday 2 to 5pm in the Collins-Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave. Rutherford .
