Obituary for Anthony "Sonny" Silver

Anthony “Sonny” Silver, 66, of Rutherford, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday December 20th, 2022. Sonny was one of 7 children and raised in Jersey City by parents, Anthony Michael Silver and Anne Marie (nee Faller). Sonny met the love of his life Judith Miller in 1979 and the couple were married for 36 years. They lived in Jersey City before settling in Rutherford, where they have resided since 1991.
At the age of 23 Sonny joined the Jersey City Police Dept. He loved being “on the job” and dedicated his life to the residents of his beloved Jersey City. He was known as “the Last Revolver on the force” because of his 38 Caliber S&W service weapon which he purchased the year he joined the force, and carried it until his retirement. During his career, he was proud to receive several awards: The Community response award, Combat Cross award, POEA Valor award, 5 commendation awards, 8 Excellent Police Service awards, 1 year Citation Award, 1 WTC award and Mayor Fulop commendation. Sonny was with the J.C. Police Dept for 42 years in the North District before retiring in March of 2021.
Sonny was very actively involved in both the Special Olympics and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He was a huge Packers, Dodgers, and Rangers fan and enjoyed playing Hockey and Basketball. Many people throughout local communities were familiar with Sonny’s famous 2001 Dodge Duranago which was adorned with Green Bay Packers decals and quotes. It was a fun obsession for everyone to enjoy.
Sonny will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted wife Judith, his children; Anthony W. Silver and Wife Jennifer Silver, Ashley Silver, Alexia Silver and Husband Victor Kwak, and Andrew Silver and fiancé Shana Motichka, his granddaughter; Avery Silver and siblings; Nancy Troy, Pamela Trasso, Janice Mazuroski, Maryann York, Barbara Foran and Alfred Silver.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, December 22nd 2-4pm and 7-9pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford. Funeral on Friday December 23rd for 9:30am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of Saint Mary, 91 Home Ave., Rutherford. Interment to follow in Crest Haven Cemetery, 750 Passaic Ave., Clifton.
