Obituary for Bernard "Bernie" D. Small, Jr.
Bernard Douglas Small Jr., 77, of Rutherford passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022. Born to Bernard Douglas Small Sr. and Dorothy (nee Knab) Small. Bernie was a proud United States Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War for 4 years. A graduate from Newark College of Engineering where he played basketball, later making his Engineering career with Control Data/Syntegra in Hackensack. He was married for 48 years to his loving spouse, Linda (nee Vaccari) Small, having one son, Matthew M. Small.
Bernie was a coach and faithful spectator for baseball and basketball, enjoying his son Matt playing for the teams with all of his friends. Even after his son finished playing, they enjoyed attending all different sporting events across New Jersey. He was devoted to his faith, active in the Church of Saint Mary in Rutherford. He enjoyed capturing all the Small family moments on film, loved a good early morning jog followed by eating his breakfast while reading the newspaper, and tending to his summer garden, producing more tomatoes and zucchini flowers than anyone could eat.
Bernie will be deeply missed by his wife Linda, son Matt, brother-in-law Paul and Ken, and nieces Jennifer (Jill and Douglas) and April (Kyle, George, and Jackson.) He is predeceased by his parents and sister Clare Small.
Family inviting friends and relatives to a Funeral Mass of Christian Liturgy to be celebrated Saturday at 10:30am, January 22, 2022 in the Church of Saint Mary, 19 Home Ave., Rutherford. Please wear a mask.
Burial will be scheduled for a later date.
