Obituary for Bridget Roth

Bridget (McManus) Roth, of Rutherford, NJ formerly of Bellerose, NY passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. Lovingly known as “Bridie” she was born on June 1, 1931, the fifth of thirteen children to Denis & Agnes (Lunney) McManus of Coolkill, Co. Fermanagh, N. Ireland. She attended Mount Lourdes Convent School in the nearby town of Enniskillen.

On March 3, 1948, at the age of 16, Bridie immigrated to America on the Queen Mary, out of Southampton, England with her older brother. She lived with her aunt and uncle in the Bronx, NY before venturing out with her cousin, to live on their own.

Her first job in NYC was at Woolworths, a “five & dime” store. She was later employed at New York Life Insurance Company, NYC where she met her sweetheart, Kenneth M. Roth. They were married on August 25, 1951, at St. Benedict’s RC Church in the Bronx, NY and resided in Bellerose, NY. Bridie and Kenny had 3 children, Patricia, Lorraine (Nienstedt) and Kenneth.

She loved to travel with her husband across the US and Europe, including many trips to Ireland to visit her family. She enjoyed time spent with long-time, wonderful friends taking walks at Jones Beach and Lido Beach and often vacationing with them. She had a warm, loving, generous spirit and had the “gift of the gab”. She could make a conversation with anyone.

Bridie was a faithful, devoted Catholic and parishioner of St. Mary Church, Rutherford. She was a former parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Church, Bellerose, NY, for 64 years, where she was an active member of the Rosary Society.
Bridie is pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Kenneth (2014), son-in-law, Steven Nienstedt (2018), and devoted daughter, Patricia (2020). She is survived by her loving daughter, Lorraine Nienstedt and caring son, Kenneth & his wife, Kasturie (Miller).
“Mimi” was a cherished grandmother to Carrie Shafer (Robert), Steven Nienstedt, Jr. (Melissa), Bridget Cronin (Michael), Thomas Nienstedt (Anna), and Katelyn Brady (Christopher). She adored her 13 great-grandchildren, Steven III, Emily, Wesley, Kayla, Brenna, Wyatt, Meghan, Norah, Abigail, Hannah, Kara, Nolan and James. Bridie is also survived by her siblings Con, Una (Mansell), Donald, Margaret (Cogan), Sheila (McMahon) & Carmel (Gilbride), all who reside in Ireland. She will also be missed by her dear cousin Eileen (McManus) Kelleher, many nieces, nephews, friends, and compassionate health-care aides & nurses.
And in Bridie’s own closing words, “God Love You”.

Family will receive friends Tuesday April 19th 9:30 to 11:00am in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincon Ave., Rutherford. Thereafter a Mass of Christian Liturgy will be held at 11:30am in the Church of Saint Mary, Rutherford. Interment Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, NY.
