Obituary for DeWitt W Walker

DeWitt W. Walker, 81, formerly of Rutherford and East Rutherford, passed away Thursday, March 2nd, 2023.  He was born on May 4, 1941 in Hackensack, New Jersey to Stewart Newton Walker and Jessie Gilbert Walker. 

He graduated from Rutherford High School in 1959, and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts from Fairleigh Dickenson University.  He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1963 to 1969.

DeWitt began his career, and is well-remembered in the 1960’s, as Manager of the ShopRite Supermarket on Park Avenue in Rutherford.   From there, he went on as an independent contractor for Coca-Cola, and later for Pepperidge Farm.  Prior to his retirement, he owned A.I.D. Models - - the construction of doll-house models for display at large real estate development sales offices.

He enjoyed his various nicknames.  To his immediate family, he was DeWitt.  To friends, he was “Dutch.”  And, to his nieces and nephews, he was either “Uncle Donut” or Uncle D.”

 He loved to play golf.

DeWitt will be missed by his sisters, Joan and Marjorie (“Midge”); his 11 nieces and nephews; 17 grand nieces and nephews; 6 great grand nieces and nephews; 2 cousins; and, by many fantastic friends.  He is predeceased by his brothers Varick (“Newt”) and Stewart, and by his partner for 13 years, Susan Moore.

Family will receive friends for a Celebration of Life on Sunday, April 23rd from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in DeWitt’s name to the American Diabetes Association.
