Obituary for Donald "Poppy" Tomko

Donald M. Tomko, “Poppy”, 81, joined his wife, Margaret (Henderson) Tomko, his mother, Ann Tomko, his father, Michael Tomko and his brother, Richard Tomko in eternal peace on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Born in Jersey City, NJ and a graduate of Rutherford High School, Don and his brothers started a band while in high school and he continued his musical contributions for many years to come with the Tomko Brothers. After years of dedicated military service to the US Army, Donald came home to start a family and continue with his musical talents at Bergen Music in Rutherford, NJ. Spending years teaching and cultivating musicians, Don found joy in each and every beautiful note. He became an active member of the Rutherford community and could be found at the bagel store with his cherished friends, any sports field watching his kids and grandkids or enjoying a good parade. Don was a social member of Rutherford Engine Company 2, a member of Rutherford Elks #547, Lyndhurst Am Vets, Bayway and Lyndhurst Polish Associations. Poppy enjoyed his last few years at his post as everyone’s favorite crossing guard! Poppy leaves behind his loving children Donna and Al Piatkowski, Donald and Tricia Tomko, and Debbie Prince. His legacy and greatest love was for his grandchildren: Grace and Joey, Olivia, Brielle, Zachary, Matthew, Gavin and Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings: Carol Tomko, Roy and Carmen Tomko, and Gregory Tomko and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, August 27 from 4-8 pm at Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at St. Mary Church on Saturday, August 28 at 9:30 am. Internment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Don will be forever remembered for his fabulous suits and a nice cigar!
