Obituary for Doris Helen Weiss

Doris Helen Weiss
July 19, 1920 – May 19, 2016

After a long and wonderful life, Doris passed away peacefully at home on the 19th of May at the age of 95. Formerly of Riegel Ridge, Milford, New Jersey, Doris lived in Rutherford, New Jersey for the past five years with her daughter, Judy Weiss Yozzo, after her devoted husband of 70 years, Robert (Bob) Weiss, passed away in 2011.

Doris was the youngest daughter and child of Earl and Kate Pfeiffer Andrews of the little village of Warren Glen, New Jersey. She attended Phillipsburg, NJ High School, graduated with the class of 1937 at the age of 16, and had been active with her class reunions all throughout the years. Doris met her future husband, Bob, a few years later and they married in 1941. Shortly thereafter, Bob and Doris built their first house on the very top of the tall hill between Milford and Warren Glen overlooking the beautiful valley to the south. It was also there, on top of that large hill, where Riegel Paper Corporation, that operated four paper mills in the area, and where most local families were employed, built a wonderful community and sports center primarily for its employees. That is how the area came to be known as Riegel Ridge. It is also there where Doris became one of the best lady bowlers in the area, being crowned her league’s individual champion one season, and serving as her team’s captain for many years.

Several years after husband Bob had begun his long career at Riegel’s Milford mill, and while Doris was was being a housewife and mom to her two children, a Milford pharmacist, Arnold Bowker, asked Doris if she would help him at his small pharmacy during a busy Christmas holiday season. Let it be said that it became a very long holiday, as Arnold asked Doris to then become a full time employee. She quickly became a familiar face and personality at the store, working the front register, tending to its greeting card section, and finally, at the ripe old age of 87, retiring after 54 remarkable years of service! It’s not an exaggeration that the gregarious, beloved, and “chatty” Doris came to know and become friends with hundreds of folks in the area.

In the early sixties, Doris and Bob were two of the original shareholders and then members of Holland Township’s Oak Hill Golf Club, and remained active for over 30 years. Doris helped sell bonds to fund its initial construction, and, once again, displayed her athletic prowess by becoming a wonderful player for such a tiny lady, occasionally posting better scores than her very proud husband.

Doris loved to cook and bake, always frequenting local farmers stands and markets for New Jersey’s finest produce, and especially its tomatoes, sweet corn and peaches. Even in her last few years, Doris would love to cook “from scratch,” amazing family and friends with her wonderful dishes. Doris was also a voracious reader, easily going through a novel a week, while rarely missing her two favorite TV shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Doris was pre-deceased by three brothers, John Andrews and Orville Andrews of Warren Glen, and Donald Andrews of Milford, and two sisters, Evelyn Andrews Hager Gyarmaty and Gertrude Andrews Matviak, both of Warren Glen. She is survived by two children, Judy Weiss Yozzo of Rutherford, NJ and Jack Weiss and wife Nan of Wilmington, North Carolina. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Cori Yozzo Verdino and husband, Tom, of Rutherford, NJ, Scott Yozzo and wife, Anna, of Nutley, NJ, Carly Elizabeth Weiss of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Mary Katherine Weiss of New York City. Additionally, Doris loved being near her four great grandchildren who she had been able to see quite often after moving to Rutherford. Doris also wanted to be certain to remember her dear niece, Sandy Hager Hamlin of Phillipsburg, NJ, with whom she had been very close throughout the years and, of course, her many other nieces and nephews.

Doris had been a long time member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Milford, NJ, and more recently of St. Mary Catholic Church in Rutherford. She and her daughter Judy also regularly attended activities at Rutherford’s Kip Senior Center.

There will be a memorial mass in her honor at St. Mary Catholic Church, 91 Home Avenue, Rutherford, N.J. Wednesday May the 25th at 9:30 a.m. Doris’ ashes will be buried alongside her late husband’s in Union Cemetery in Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, at some later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Shawl Ministries of St. Edward Catholic Church, 61 Mill Street, Milford, NJ 08848.
