Obituary for Dorothy "Alice " Gargiulo

Dorothy “Alice” Gargiulo (nee Hughes) was born on January 16, 1936, in Jersey City to parents, Patrick Joseph Hughes and Mary Bridgette Hughes, (nee Agnew). Alice attended high school in Jersey City until the age of 16 when she went to work full time to help support herself and her family.

On June 12, 1955, she married Salvatore Gargiulo (deceased) in Jersey City. A marriage unto which were born her children Barbara (deceased), Diane, and Sal. Alice and Salvatore were married for 50 years before Salvatore predeceased her.

Alice was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and in-law. She had a strong bond with everyone in her family and enjoyed a special relationship with her grandchildren Michael, Nicholas, Salvatore, and Jamie.

Alice was of strong religious faith and enjoyed volunteering at the church, and at St. Mary’s School. She raised three children and worked alongside with her husband to start a construction business. Her greatest joy was being able to spend time with her family. She was a kind person who always had something nice to say about everyone. When a family member friend, or neighbor were sick, Alice was always there to lend a hand. She cared for her parents, her husband, her daughter, and even her brother-in-law when they were extremely ill.
Her proudest achievements were her children and acquiring her high school GED. After she put all her children through college, she went back to take classes to get her GED which she received on September 4, 1986, at the age of 50. She was a well-read woman who loved to travel, and she loved being Irish!

She will be fondly remembered by many and is survived by her siblings, Margaret Kenihan, Dorothy Gavura, Patrick Hughes, her sister-in-law Catherine McMillan her children Diane Gargiulo and Sal Gargiulo, her grandchildren, Michael Marino, Nicholas Gargiulo, Salvatore Gargiulo, and Jamie Andrews and many nieces and nephews.
