Obituary for Dorothy L Service (Lewis)


Dorothy L. Service, 93, a former resident of Glen Rock for 50 years, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ. She was the daughter of Joseph E. and Mary A. Brewster Lewis of Rutherford. She was a descendant of William Brewster, one of the original settlers who traveled to North America on the Mayflower.
Dorothy graduated in 1936 from Rutherford HS and Packard Business School in 1937. She was employed as a secretary for Eastern Steamship, Pall Mall Cigarette Co. and W.J. Barney all of New York City. As a resident of Glen Rock, she was active in All Saints Episcopal Church, served as a volunteer at Kurth Cottage for The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, was a Girl Scout leader and a bridge club enthusiast. Dorothy's hobby was oil and acrylic painting, and she studied with several local artists. She presented an exhibit of her paintings at Heath Village in Hackettstown. Her family and friends are fortunate to enjoy her completed pieces in their homes.



Dorothy will be missed by her husband of 66 years, George B. Service Jr. currently at Heath Village in Hackettstown, her children Kathleen Service Coffin and husband Charles H. of Palm Harbour FL, Elizabeth A. Service Seabury and husband David of St Michaels MD, and Nancy Service Marosits of Englewood CO. Dorothy is survived by her 6 grandchildren: Jessica (husband Marc) Larochelle, Matthew Seabury, Lauren Seabury, Charles Coffin, Christina Coffin, and Michael Marosits. She is also survived by her brother, William Lewis of Indialantic FL, formerly of Rutherford. She was predeceased by her sister, Anna May Hand, of Ridgewood.



In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to The Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.



A private graveside funeral service will be held Monday, January 16. A memorial service will be scheduled in the Spring.



Interment: Hillside Cemetery, Orient Way and Route 17, Lyndhurst NJ.
