Obituary for Dr. Charles Larkin

Charles A. Larkin, PhD, 95, long time resident of Rutherford, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021. Born in Bayonne as one of 9 children to Paul Alexander and Alease Larkin (Jones) on April 20, 1925.

When he was a young man Charles settled in Rutherford where he and his wife Blanche raised their family and remained since the 1960’s. He was a proud United States Army Veteran having served during WWII.

Charles always had a love for teaching from a young age. As a grade school child he loved getting the opportunity to teach his fellow classmates. He would eventually become a third grade teacher himself. On June 19, 1953 he earned his Bachelors degree in Arts from NYU of Washington Square . He later earned his Masters in Arts on June 6, 1967 from Jersey City College. His love for furthering education would inspire him to earn a Doctorate (PhD) in Political Science on May 16, 1996 from Fordham College. He was a Professor at Essex County College before he retired. There he has been acknowledged for his good merits and achievements. During his tenure he was the President of the Teachers Union and the Teachers Convention.

He was well known as a good man with strong principles, good values, integrity and fairness. He found his passion in his profession and his students. A man of simple pleasures you could find him fishing with his beloved friends out on the open ocean. He loved to go to the courts to play tennis! He could also be found listening to the tunes of Charlie Parker while sipping his wine and enjoying his cigar. He enjoyed his life. He had a lot of love in his heart for his family and friends.

Charles was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Blanche (Vanburen) Larkin (2015) his children, Sheela Larkin, Thomas Larkin and Anthony Larkin and his brothers Donald, Leon, Leo, Richard, Walter his sisters Alease and Alberta.

He will be greatly missed by his loving sister Pauline, his grandchildren, Jonah and wife Lavinia , Thomas Jr., Freddy, Erica, Janette and his 6 great-grandchildren; Jazmine, Egypt, Nia, Onyx, Landon and Bryson.

Also survived by nieces Linda, Dawn and many other nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday at 1:00pm in Hillside Cemetery, 742 Rutherford Ave., Lyndhurst.
