Dr. Ruth Andersen Allen, Ed.D., of Verona, formerly of Clifton and Montclair, died on October 4, 2009 surrounded by her family.
Ruth was a Veteran serving in the Women's Army Corps., during WWII. She also earned her doctoral degree in 1950 from Columbia University in NYC, after first receiving her Bachelor's degree and Master's of Science from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
As a professor, she instructed at Jersey City State College, teaching Elementary Education for 30 years. She was a devoted pioneer in elementary education, personally making major improvements to the curriculum taught in the Nutley school system as well as and other local municipalities.
Active in the Calvary Baptist Church in Clifton, she taught Sunday school for many years and was on many committees aimed at both spreading the word of the Lord to other countries as well as locally.
Ruth is pre-deceased by her loving husband Hugh (1970), and survived by her children Hugh Allen III and his wife Judy, Douglas P. and his wife Mary Ann, Theresa Allen and Helene Allen. Loving grandmother of Lindsey, Douglas Jr. and Tess.
Friends are invited to attend religious services 7:30pm Wednesday in the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford, NJ . Cremation Private. Visiting Hours Wednesday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9pm. If so desired, donations may be made in Ruth's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
