Obituary for Dr. Michael T. Burgio, MD
Dr. Michael T. Burgio, 69, of Franklin Lakes, passed away on June 4, 2020.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who will be missed deeply by so many.
Michael was married to his beautiful wife, Piera, of 41 years. They met in 1977 thanks to his sister-in-law Maria Lucia Burgio, who introduced them after seeing each other at a dance. He leaves behind his children, Cynthia Teller, her husband John Teller, his grandchildren Anthony and Matthew Teller, his daughter Daniela and son Michael.
He was born on November 26, 1950 in Solarino, Sicily to Salvatore and Giuseppa Burgio. He was the middle child, with older brother Joe Burgio and younger sister Maria Schmalhorst. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1958. Michael and his family truly achieved the American Dream thanks to the sacrifices and hard work that was instilled in them from their parents. When they came to the U.S., Michael and his family came through Ellis Island and settled in Orange, NJ for a period of time. Later, they moved and settled in Elmwood Park where Michael grew up and graduated from Elmwood Park High School. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Zoology from Rutgers University in 1974, and he was a beloved member of Kappa Phi fraternity.
Michael worked as an emergency medicine doctor for about 35 years. Before becoming a doctor, Michael worked as a pharmacist. He graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1976 and obtained his Bachelor of Science. His passion for the medical field and for helping others drove him to pursue his dreams and further his education in medicine. He graduated from Saint George’s University in Grenada in 1985. He completed his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson and his residency at Easton Hospital in Pennsylvania. He went on to work as an emergency medicine doctor at various hospitals, including East Orange General Hospital, Hackensack Hospital, Bon Secours Hospital, Southern Ocean County Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center, Hackettstown Medical Center, Newton Medical Center and various urgent care locations. But it was at Newton Medical Center where he spent most of his career in emergency medicine. Michael dedicated his life to helping others, whether it was his patients or his family and friends.
For anyone that knew Michael, they know that he was a loving and devoted family man. He worked tirelessly to provide a better life for his family. Michael was also a deeply faithful man and was very close to God. Even on vacation whether in Aruba or Mexico or anywhere else in the world he went, he made sure to attend Sunday Mass. Michael was full of life and loved to travel. He was a genuine person who took great interest in everyone he met and spoke to. His smile would light up a room.
In addition to his passion and love for his family and medicine, Michael had a passion for running and traveling. He participated in numerous marathons around the globe, such as Boston, Washington D.C., Virginia Beach, New York City, the Jersey Shore, Berlin, France, and Ireland to name a few. He also was blessed to travel around the world to various countries, such as Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, China, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Turkey, Dubai, Egypt, Colombia, Ice Land, and Morocco to name a few. He had deep appreciation and interest for experiencing different cultures and traditions.
Michael was called back by God far too soon after a long, hard fought battle with Covid-19. He will be sorely missed by so many, especially his wife, children, grandchildren, along with his beloved extended family, friends and colleagues
