Eugene J. Vater, 74, of Lyndhurst, NJ died unexpectedly Monday, August 28, 2023. Born April 19, 1949, in Latrobe, PA, he was the son of the late Eugene and Kathleen (Kaltenbach) Vater.

Gene was a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology and received a master’s degree from Columbia University. He is a retired chemist, having been employed by Schering Plough Corporation. He enjoyed running, watching and reading about sports and spending time with his family and friends. Gene will be remembered for being a devout Catholic who was generous with his time, talents, and treasures. He was an active member of the Community of God’s Love congregation for over 50 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen (Vater) Mortenson. Gene is survived by his sister Maureen Aldemeyer Hiner, his brother Stephen Vater and brother Thomas Vater and sister-in-law Carol. Gene will be missed greatly by his nephews and nieces: John Mortenson (Kyle), Kate  Tilman (Sean), Emily Aldemeyer, Nick Aldemeyer (Beth) and Greg, Matt and Dan Vater as well as great nephews and nieces Zach and Mason Aldemeyer, Ben, Leah, and David Aldemeyer and Hunter and Rosie Tilman.
Family and friends will celebrate his life with a Mass on Monday, September 4, 2023 at Community of Gods Love, 70 W Passaic Ave., Rutherford, gathering 11am for 11:30 Mass.
Inurnnment will be at a later date at St. Vincent Cemetery in Latrobe, PA.
