Obituary for Frederick T Gusciora

Frederick Thomas Gusciora
Loved by All
Frederick T. Gusciora “Freddy”, 88, passed peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2019 after a short extremely debilitating battle with cancer. He is now joyfully reunited with the love of his life, his wife Joan, who predeceased him in 2011.

Born in 1930 in Garfield, NJ, Frederick lived there before moving to Wallington with his bride, Joan (Sojka), in 1957. Life brought many changes and they moved to Packanack Lake, returned to Wallington, and ultimately relocated to Rutherford. Fred attended Washington Irving School #4 and Garfield High School before enrolling in Paterson State Teachers College (now William Paterson University) where he remained for 2 months before volunteering into the service for 4 years. He was an Air Force Staff Sergeant, stationed in Chandler, Arizona. While in Arizona, he was able to attend classes at Arizona State for 2 years. Upon his return to civilian life, he reenrolled at Paterson State Teachers College under the G.I. bill and earned his B.S. in 1955. Continuing his education, he received a M.S. in Administration and Supervision in 1958.
Frederick’s first teaching job was in Saddle Brook where he taught 5th and 6th grades for 3 years before taking a position in the Newark Public School District. He remained there for the rest of his teaching career, 35 1/2 years, teaching math and science, woodshop, and 7th and 8th grades. After his retirement from teaching in 1991, he took the civil service exam and was offered several positions, selecting to work for the State of New Jersey, Division of Taxation, as an Investigator in the Fair Lawn office on August 3, 1993 where he remained for 22 years.
Frederick was very athletic, playing basketball for USAF Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, Arizona and 2 years varsity for Paterson State Teachers College. He loved playing tennis and was an active member and on the Board of Governors of the Arlington Player’s Club for many years. Throughout his life, he loved to dance with his wife Joan, and, in his late 70’s, even took up Zumba. He was always active: working, exercising, fixing things in the home, and helping others. Freddy was always up for a new adventure. He loved to travel. He was always available to help a friend out, share a laugh and a beer or glass of wine, and live life to its fullest potential. He loved many activities that included good conversations and food – especially the gatherings with his tennis buddies, and the “Lunch Bunch”. He particularly enjoyed family times, especially at the beach house, where life moved at a slower pace, and celebrating every holiday.

Frederick is survived by his devoted children Sandra (David) and Edward (Elyse), and his loving grandchildren Daniel (April), Andrew, Scott and Jillian. He will be greatly missed by countless friends and extended family. He is predeceased by his parents Catherine (Kowalski) and John and his siblings Edward and Alice (Bacik).

Family will receive friends June 4th, 2019 Tuesday 2-4pm & 7-9pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave, Rutherford.
Funeral Wednesday 9:30am from Funeral Home for 10:30am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of Saint Mary, Rutherford.
Interment in Crest Haven Memorial Park, Clifton.
