Obituary for George N. De Gregorio

George De Gregorio -- writer, editor, poet, father, husband, lover, and dreamer - died on September 1, 2010 surrounded by his family after a 6-month battle with cancer.
He was 82 years old. Born on February 15, 1928 in New Haven, Connecticut, De Gregorio was a staff editor and writer for The New York Times, where he worked for 39 years in Sports and other departments.
His newspaper colleagues remembered him as "one of the true gentlemen in the business. He mentored many…under his watch as a slot editor before retiring in 2000."
De Gregorio served as a medical NCO in the US Army with the Nagano Military Government Team in occupied Japan.
He was a graduate of The University of Connecticut. A prize winning author of fiction and poetry in college, he became a reporter and columnist at the New Haven Register and theToledo Blade.
In addition to his work at the Times, he was also the sports editor for the Information Please Almanac. He wrote Joe DiMaggio, an Informal Biography published by Stein and Day in 1981 -- one of the Time's notable books of 1982. De Gregorio resumed writing poetry in retirement and was a founding member of the William Carlos Williams Poetry Cooperative in Rutherford, New Jersey. The group, also known as the Red Wheel Barrow Poets, published some of his poems in their 2008, 2009, and 2010 anthologies. In 2009, he published a book of poetry entitled, Zerilda's Chair and other poems. The well-known and popular website Three Quarks Daily has also posted his work. De Gregorio read his poetry widely at venues throughout Northern New Jersey and New York.
A long time resident of Rutherford, New Jersey he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, their four children: Barry, Steven, Karen, and Carl and three grandchildren; two brothers Emil, and the late Louis.
A viewing will be held Thursday at Collins-Calhoun Funeral Home in Rutherford, New Jersey, between the hours of 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday at the Church of Saint Mary, also in Rutherford, at 9:30am.
