Obituary for Howard W. Tagliabue

Howard W. Tagliabue of Rutherford died on Sunday, April 8, 2012 in Hackensack Hospital. He was 87.
Born in West New York and raised in Secaucus, Howard graduated from Union Hill High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II as Signalman, and served aboard the USS Maloy off Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion.
After the war, he attended Central College in Pella Iowa, where he earned a degree in Mathematics. He worked for the Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC for more than 35 years, and later as a banking consultant. He was active in community organizations, and was a founding member of StarFish of Rutherford. He served the First Presbyterian Church in Rutherford as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and Treasurer. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Verla Harmelink, and four children: Robert of Rutherford; John (Sarah Marshall) of Rutherford; Nancy Polhamus (John) of Glassboro; and Judy Marshall (Charles) of Fountain Valley, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Emily Polhamus, Andrew Polhamus, and Anna Marshall-Tagliabue.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 12 at 3pm in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, 1 E. Passaic Avenue, Rutherford. The family will greet visitors from 1-3pm. Interment will be private.
Donations in Howard’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford or the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, PO Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.
