James P.  Manning
James P. Manning. Born October 31, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York.DiedApril 7, 2009 at Hackensack Univ. Hospital.A resident Rutherford, he was married to Alberta Ann Manning nee Kowalchik of Nanticoke, Pa. Father of Corinne Cecelia (Leon), Stephen George, Francis Xavier, James Patrick, Jr.,William Thomas, and Henry David. Fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Jim graduated in 1948 from Brooklyn Prep. He received a baseball scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, earning varsity letters in 1950 and 1951 and graduating in 1952. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Jim played shortstop and third base for the 1953 Quantico Marines, which won the All Marine baseball title. He then served in the Japan and Korea with the First and Third Marine Divisions. After three years of active duty, he completed 17 years in the Marine Reserve and retired as a lieutenant colonel.After active duty, Jim played minor league baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He then entered Fordham Law School from which he graduated in 1958.Jim began his law career with the Lehigh Valley Railroad. He then worked as an associate for the law firms of Dewey Ballantine and Cravath Swaine &Moore. He joined the law dept of Consolidated Edison in 1968, handling real estate matters for the company until his retirement in 1993 as Asst General Counsel.Jim coached youth sports in Rutherford for over 18 years. He was the manager of the1981 Rutherford Babe Ruth Sr. (16-18 year old) baseball team which went undefeated and won the Babe Ruth World Series title.He belonged to the Military Officers Assoc of American, Northern NJ chapter; Brooklyn Prep Alumni Assoc. (President, 1981-1983), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Notre Dame Monogram Club, and Notre Dame Alumni Assoc. He was inducted into the Rutherford High School Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2008.
