He was a caring husband and father, devoted to his family, including his loving wife of 55 years, Thelma, their children Rosemarie and Thomas, his sister, Gloria, and his many cousins.

James was born in the Bronx, New York. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and the University of Notre Dame, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Among his career achievements are his contributions to the Apollo space program, including serving as project engineer for a simulator projector used for lunar orbit and flight training, as well as his development of medical equipment and apparatus for which he was granted three U.S. Patents. His work, specializing in mechanical design of optical systems, took him across multiple companies, including Bulova, Farrand Optical, Perkin-Elmer, Union Carbide, Exxon, Mitsubishi, and McDonnell Douglas.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having been called to serve his country during the Korean War, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a past president of the Parish Council for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ardsley, N.Y. He took great joy in his Italian heritage; shared his love of music, movies, and comedy with his family; and was a lifelong fan of the Bronx Bombers.
