Obituary for James S.T.S Ely, Jr. Esq.
James S.T.S. Ely, Jr., Esq. 90, a lifelong resident of Rutherford passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Rutherford in 1929 to James S.T.S. Ely and Rosalie (nee Watson), James was a graduate of Rutherford High School in 1946, University of Michigan in 1950 and Rutgers Law School in 1956.
James proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War before beginning his career in law. He practiced for over 50 years for Ely & Ely and later Smith & Ely.
His longtime service to the community included a term as Rutherford Councilman, Borough Attorney, a Bergen County Ethics Committee member, a Masonic Boiling Springs Lodge #152 member for 60 years and Past Master, a member of the Elks Club & Rotary Club, and an Elder and Deacon for the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford. His passions included reading, golf as a member of the Upper Montclair Country Club, tennis, and spending time with his many friends.
Of all, his greatest joy was family; particularly his 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
James was predeceased by his wife Joan (nee Waterhouse) in 2005.
He is survived by his loving and devoted children, J. Christopher Ely and wife Paula, James S. Ely III and wife Elisabeth, Nancy Ely-Maskal, and John Ely; his sister, Cookie Scherba; his grandchildren, Lauren Torjussen, Adam Ely, Alex Ely, Sarah Ely, Margaret Nagy, Emily Ely, and Jessica Maskal; and his great-grandchildren, Payton Torjussen and Charlotte Torjussen.
Family will receive friends Friday, November 15th from 4-8pm at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford, NJ 07070.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 16th at 10am at the First Presbyterian Church, 1 East Passaic Ave., Rutherford with Interment following at Hillside Cemetery, 742 Rutherford, Ave., Lyndhurst, 07071.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Masonic Charity Foundation, 902 Jacksonville Road, Burlington, NJ 08016.
