Obituary for Jean Ellen Rogers

Jean Ellen Rogers, 97, formerly of Rutherford and Wood-Ridge, NJ, passed away
peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2023, after a brief illness. Jean was born in Columbus,
OH, to Nora (O’Shaughnessy) and Philip Schneider, and moved to Rutherford in 1931.
She was the youngest of eleven. Her predeceased siblings were sisters Ann Schneider
and Mary Manney, and her brothers Philip, Louis, Rev. J. Daniel, Jeremiah, William
Joseph, John (Jack), Edward and Frederick. Her husband Matthew L. Rogers, Jr,
passed away in 2001. She is survived by her children Mark (Barbara), Marybeth
Rogers, Jeffrey (Flor), Faith Sanson (Raymond) and Robin Alexander; eight
grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Jean was a former educator in the Wood-Ridge school system, where she taught
elementary school students at Catherine E. Doyle School, as well as Mt. Pleasant
School. Before becoming a teacher, she worked in textbook marketing for book
publishers Prentice-Hall, Allyn & Bacan and Silver Burdett Company.
Jean graduated from Adelphi College in 1948 with a B.S. degree in Education. She
completed her M.A. in Education, from New York University, in 1961.
Jean was a parishioner of the Church of St. Mary in Rutherford, and was actively
involved as a Eucharistic Minister, in the Lazarus Ministry, their Bereavement Support
Group, and the Altar Society. She was also active in the Rutherford Blood Bank.
Jean loved chocolate, sushi, the Jersey shore, eating out, crossword puzzles, and
socializing with her friends and family. In her later years she became the matriarch of
the Rogers and Schneider families, a role she embraced with gusto. She entertained
many guests in her Rutherford home and spent countless happy hours talking on the
telephone with her family and friends. With the help of her grandchildren, she even
learned to love her computer, iPad, email and her home printer. She will be greatly
missed.
In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be
made in Jean’s memory to a charity of your choice or to:
