Kathleen E. Clare, 62, of Barnegat, NJ (formerly of Rutherford), passed away peacefully on July 11, 2020, with her loving wife Victoria Davis Clare at her side. Born April 30, 1958, in Passaic, NJ, and raised in Rutherford, NJ she was the oldest daughter of Charles E. and Dorothy E. (nee Knapp) Clare.

Kathy attended Immaculate Conception High School (Lodi, NJ) and St. Peter’s University (Jersey City, NJ) graduating with a degree in Business Administration. Kathy worked for 35 years in the family business, Clare’s Shop-Rite in Rutherford. NJ from the time she was in high school till the store’s close in 2008. Kathy’s unmistakable voice and trademark winning smile will always be synonymous with the West-End Shop-Rite. After the store’s closing, Kathy continued her career in Sales and Marketing with Hillcrest Gardens (Paramus, NJ), until her retirement in 2015.

Kathy had many interests but will be most remembered as an avid sports fan of both the NY Mets and NY Giants. She attended countless games with friends and family tailgating, celebrating and supporting her teams. Throughout her youth, Kathy participated in Rutherford Recreation Girls Softball Leagues, playing for the championship PEARLS and Rutherford Bi-County Softball League as a gifted 3rd Baseman and, as an adult, she pitched for Paisano’s Women’s Softball Team for 10 years. Her love of sports also extended to professional tennis. Through the years, Kathy attended the US Open, Wimbledon and the French Open to watch her favorite players go head-to-head. Kathy organized the Volvo northeast NJ Tennis League with over 500 members and was a player and coach of the K.A. Tennis League Team. Her love for tennis also went beyond the court as the owner of the pro-shop at the Clifton Racquet Club for many years. Never one to slow down, after retiring she served as member and co-chair of the H.P. Shuffleboard League as well as a member of the H.P. Bocci Ball Team.

Kathy will always be remembered as a fun loving, kind and generous person who enjoyed not only sports but donating her time, talent and energy to the Rutherford Women’s Club, organizing charitable events in her local community and serving the parish of St. Francis of Assisi ANCC Church (Glen Ridge, NJ), not only as a founding member but as President of the Parish Council for over 10 years.

Predeceased by her parents and her brother Kevin, Kathy is survived by her loving wife, Victoria Davis Clare, her brothers Martin (Christine) Clare, John (Mary Jannicelli) Clare, sisters Barbara (Harry) Clare-Chewning and Elizabeth (Fred) Clare-Wallenquest (nee Scherba). She also survived by her nephews, Justin, Andrew and Michael Clare, Kevin and Ryan Scherba, nieces Brittany and Shannon Clare and Emily Davis, her Aunt Joan and Uncle John Blanchfield, countless beloved cousins and other dear relatives and one extraordinary furbaby, Buddy (#3) H. Clare.

I lived across the street from Kathy for almost 20 years in Wood-Ridge. She was the funniest person I ever met and the kindest of souls . I most remember her for her infectious laugh. Her passing was a shock. My love to Victoria. Due to Covid restrictions I was unable to attend.

I am so sorry to hear about Kathy's passing. Kathy's presence was larger than life, from her mile wide smile to her even bigger heart. Kathy was a dear friend starting during our shared Shop Rite days to watching our dear Mets and Giants play, as well as many great times on the tennis court. The world is a darker place without Kathy in it. My condolences to Victoria and to all the Clares.

To the Hackett Place Clares--
The Wood Street Willises send their deepest sympathy to all of you and especially to Victoria. No matter where we travel or live Rutherford will always be part of our souls and nobody is more "Rutherford" than the Clare family.and Kathy herself. From leading the way for a generation of girls playing at Memorial field to her leadership and smile at her post of Shop-Rite she is woven into the fabric of our hometown.
May God oontinue to watch over Kathy (and her Mets and Giants.)
Peace be with the Clare Clan during this time
