Obituary for Kathleen Elizabeth Clare

Kathleen E. Clare, 62, of Barnegat, NJ (formerly of Rutherford), passed away peacefully on July 11, 2020, with her loving wife Victoria Davis Clare at her side. Born April 30, 1958, in Passaic, NJ, and raised in Rutherford, NJ she was the oldest daughter of Charles E. and Dorothy E. (nee Knapp) Clare.

Kathy attended Immaculate Conception High School (Lodi, NJ) and St. Peter’s University (Jersey City, NJ) graduating with a degree in Business Administration. Kathy worked for 35 years in the family business, Clare’s Shop-Rite in Rutherford. NJ from the time she was in high school till the store’s close in 2008. Kathy’s unmistakable voice and trademark winning smile will always be synonymous with the West-End Shop-Rite. After the store’s closing, Kathy continued her career in Sales and Marketing with Hillcrest Gardens (Paramus, NJ), until her retirement in 2015.

Kathy had many interests but will be most remembered as an avid sports fan of both the NY Mets and NY Giants. She attended countless games with friends and family tailgating, celebrating and supporting her teams. Throughout her youth, Kathy participated in Rutherford Recreation Girls Softball Leagues, playing for the championship PEARLS and Rutherford Bi-County Softball League as a gifted 3rd Baseman and, as an adult, she pitched for Paisano’s Women’s Softball Team for 10 years. Her love of sports also extended to professional tennis. Through the years, Kathy attended the US Open, Wimbledon and the French Open to watch her favorite players go head-to-head. Kathy organized the Volvo northeast NJ Tennis League with over 500 members and was a player and coach of the K.A. Tennis League Team. Her love for tennis also went beyond the court as the owner of the pro-shop at the Clifton Racquet Club for many years. Never one to slow down, after retiring she served as member and co-chair of the H.P. Shuffleboard League as well as a member of the H.P. Bocci Ball Team.

Kathy will always be remembered as a fun loving, kind and generous person who enjoyed not only sports but donating her time, talent and energy to the Rutherford Women’s Club, organizing charitable events in her local community and serving the parish of St. Francis of Assisi ANCC Church (Glen Ridge, NJ), not only as a founding member but as President of the Parish Council for over 10 years.

Predeceased by her parents and her brother Kevin, Kathy is survived by her loving wife, Victoria Davis Clare, her brothers Martin (Christine) Clare, John (Mary Jannicelli) Clare, sisters Barbara (Harry) Clare-Chewning and Elizabeth (Fred) Clare-Wallenquest (nee Scherba). She also survived by her nephews, Justin, Andrew and Michael Clare, Kevin and Ryan Scherba, nieces Brittany and Shannon Clare and Emily Davis, her Aunt Joan and Uncle John Blanchfield, countless beloved cousins and other dear relatives and one extraordinary furbaby, Buddy (#3) H. Clare.

Family will receive friends and loved ones on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, from 4-8 pm at Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford, NJ 07070. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 10 am, at St. Francis of Assisi ANCC, 195 Ridgewood Ave., Glen Ridge, NJ 07028.

Family is requesting those traveling from out of State to quarantine for 14 days upon arriving in NJ.
