Life Story for Lawrence J. "Larry " Fagan

Lawrence J. Fagan, Sr. died peacefully at home in Mountain Lakes, NJ surrounded by family after a 4 year battle with cancer.

Larry was born on March 4, 1942 in Jersey City, N.J. the first of 9 children to Edna Jane McGimpsey and Hugh Fagan. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years Karen Conahan Fagan. Larry is survived by his son Lawrence Jr., and his children, Sophie, Cullen, Lawson and Lawrence III, his daughter Kathleen and her daughter Demi, and his daughter Suzanne (Brian) and their daughters Elizabeth and Lauren.

Larry enjoyed playing basketball and delivering newspapers with his Uncle Freddy in Jersey City as a boy, until the family moved to Rutherford, NJ where Larry graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1959. His summers were spent at their lake house in Denville where he lifeguarded and his 3 brothers competed in the HUB Lakes swimming league. Upon graduation he enlisted into the Navy working in information systems and honorably discharged in 1963. Larry then attended Seton Hall University graduating with an M.S and an MBA. His first job was in Newark, NJ at Mutual Benefit Insurance Company where he met Karen, a legal secretary in the company’s Legal Department. Larry retired after over 25 years from Schering Plough Corporation in Kenilworth, NJ.

Larry and Karen raised their family in Lincoln Park, NJ. He enjoyed coaching numerous sports for the children and planning camping trips with their travel trailer especially to Sebago Lake, Maine. He spent many weekends working on home projects with his friend Ray, Jimmy and Ken.

Larry was a big fan of the Jets, Mets and Knicks. He enjoyed talking about sports and politics on long phone calls with his brothers at high decibel levels. He also enjoyed large family gatherings at Grandma Fagan’s house in Rutherford or at his home.

Upon retirement Larry and Karen moved to Cape May, NJ. They enjoyed traveling abroad and when back in Cape May loved having their family and friends at the beach. Larry was an avid reader and loved history. He enjoyed golfing at Cape May National with his buddies, Nordic walking, kayaking and donating his time with the local Family Promise of Cape May. Larry was always eager to watch the grandkids sports and music activities and help out in any way he could. We are grateful for this and the 20 years he helped mom manage her cancer.
