Obituary for Margaret Loffredo

Margherita Rita (nee Traversone) Loffredo, also known as Margaret and Margie, passed away on February 25, 2024, at the age of 98. She was born at home on May 23, 1925, to Serafina Barattini and Giuseppe Traversone, and was the youngest of four daughters after Angela, Helen, and Marie. She enjoyed growing up in Greenwich Village, attended PS3 and earned a full scholarship to Hunter College. However, college was not in her future as she immediately went to work as a clerk in the law office of George Cella.

She was very social and attended weekly mixers in NYC with the incarcerated Italian prisoners of war.  Our parents first met in Italy when she was 10 years old and Dad was 17. A decade later, their love blossomed through the letters they wrote each other every single day. On Sept. 18, 1947, eighteen days after her arrival in Italy, they were married by her uncle, Don Enrico Barattini, at the Basilica di Santa Maria Immacolata in Genoa.

They settled in Greenwich Village, living at 78 Christopher Street. She often spoke fondly of her friends at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where she worked prior to giving birth to Robert and Carla Loffredo. She was a stay-at-home mom and spent weekends helping our dad at their Italian Pizzeria in Maspeth.

In 1964, she started her banking career as a teller at Irving Trust Company with promotions to head teller and assistant in the Private Client Division. She loved her job and would share the many wonderful stories of her illustrious clientele and colleagues.

She enjoyed travel, especially to Elbow Beach in Bermuda, cruises with her friends from Greenwich Village and many trips to Italy. She LOVED to dance at the dinners hosted by the Tiro A Segno Club.

Margaret’s life centered on her husband Euro, and her children, Robert and Carla. They were her pride and joy, as family was the most important part of her life. Their marriage lasted 56 years and was a testament to their love and devotion. She was thrilled to be “Nonni” to Matthew and Lauren, their children, Justin, Maddy, Tyler, and Mia, and a “full-time Nonni” to Serafina, helping raise her from birth.

Our Mom was a warm, compassionate woman who always went out of her way to help others and formed many long-lasting friendships over the years. Her love knew no bounds as she connected with so many people during her lifetime. She will be greatly missed.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Euro, and sisters, Angela, Helen, and Marie. She is survived by her children, Robert and Carla, their spouses, Kathleen and Daniel, her grandchildren Matthew, Lauren, and Serafina, great grandchildren Justin, Maddy, Tyler, and Mia, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, both here and in Italy.
