Obituary

Maria Laura Del Busto, 84, of Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba passed away on April 14, 2020 after a short battle with COVID-19.

Maria was born to the late Marcos Vicente and Basilisa Almeida, October 30, 1935 in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba. Maria was a fighter from a very young age. Early in her life, Maria’s father fell ill of stomach cancer and passed away at the age of 45. Maria changed her plans of graduating college and pursuing a career in law to help her mother and brother lead and manage their businesses and farm in Cuba. At the early age of 19, she managed a bakery, beauty salon, trucking business and farm. She was a natural entrepreneur and leader until everything was taken away from the family during the Castro regime. She was unfairly imprisoned for selling handmade wigs and left her native country with no belongings except her childhood memories for the pursuit of freedom in 1973. Maria met her husband, Everardo Del Busto in Madrid, Spain. They married on March 6, 1976 and had their first daughter, Maria. They relocated to the United States in August 1977 where they had their second daughter, Angelica and were happily married for 42 years. Maria is survived by two children, Maria Mendez and her husband, Samuel Mendez of Rutherford and Angelica Del Busto-Rodriguez and her husband, Alexander Rodriguez of Rutherford. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Gabriel, Angelica, Olivia and Alexandra and her loving nephew, Marcos Vicente and loving sister-in-law Florentina Vicente.

Maria was a devout Catholic and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a progressive leader, hard worker with a strong and vibrant personality. She was modest, humble, loving and honest, some would say a little too honest and blunt at times but always with the best of intentions. She enjoyed singing and always filled the room up with laughter, love and joy. We will always remember her singing the old Cuban music with joy like "El Manisero" and "La Chambelona." She always taught us about Cuban culture, history and the beauty of our country and she was always so grateful to the United States for giving her family the freedom and opportunity to raise a family and have a second home. Maria was the matriarch of our family, the "glue" that held our family together. We will miss her contagious laughter and her beautiful spirit. She leaves nothing but beautiful memories and we will miss her dearly.

Private Entombment in Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum on Monday. A “Celebration of life” will be scheduled in the future.

In lieu of flowers, consider providing a donation in her honor to the NJ Pandemic Relief Fund (https://cfnj.networkforgood.com). Proceeds go to help stop the spread of the coronavirus by supporting the healthcare workers, providing help to the vulnerable like long term facilities and rebuilding the communities.
