Mary Jane Wirth of Rutherford, NJ, formerly of Jersey City and Kearny NJ, Newport, NH, and Lady Lake, FL, passed peacefully in her sleep on January 17, 2017 at Peace Care -St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Jersey City.

Mary Jane was the youngest of six children born to the late Charles Mason and Mary (O’Donnell) Mason on December 19, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ. Upon graduating from the Academy of St. Aloysius she began work at Egyptian Lacquer Coatings Co. where she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Wirth. Together they raised three children and were a strong presence in their communities. Mary Jane was a tireless and generous person who selflessly gave her time to numerous community and religious organizations. She started the teen club at St. Aloysius in JC, was active in the Kearny Elks club and their charitable endeavors, and was Past-President of their Woman’s Club. She was an active parishioner at Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington. Mary Jane worked for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and frequently volunteered her time with that organization. With the family’s move to NH, Mary Jane became the Deputy Tax Collector for the Town of Newport, parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church and member of the church Women’s Club. She also owned and operated a local motel. Mary Jane and Bill retired to Florida where she continued to participate in many social and charitable activities. With the passing of her beloved Bill in 2001 after 50 years of marriage, Mary Jane found her next calling. Providing support for those experiencing the same loss she experienced, Mary Jane became a grief counsellor and led the grief support system for Saint Timothy Catholic Church in Lady Lake, FL for many years. Mary Jane considered this one of the most rewarding times of her life. Mary Jane moved back to New Jersey in 2012 when she moved in with her daughter, Doreen where she was involved in the Community of God’s Love in Rutherford. She was a member of the Welcoming Ministry and always had a hug and a warm smile for visitors. When Mary Jane could no longer volunteer her time, she continued to show her generosity by financially supporting many local and national charities. Mary Jane was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her happiest moments were when her family was all together.

Mary Jane is predeceased by her sisters Ethel Gibney and Gladys Mason, and brothers Walter Mason, Charles Mason and Lawrence Mason. She will be lovingly missed by her children, daughters Sheryl Rendzia and her husband Walter of Nellysford,VA, and Doreen Cevasco and her husband Andrew of Rutherford, NJ, her son William Jr and his wife Lauren of Sherborn, MA, her grandchildren Walter Rendzia of Nellysford, VA, Kara Williams and her husband Christopher of West Roxbury, MA, Marc Cevasco and his wife Jenna of Washington, DC, Alison Iannarone and her husband Christopher of Totowa, NJ, Andrew Cevasco and his wife Monique of Baltimore, MD, Kevin Cevasco of Jersey City, NJ, Casey Wirth of Dover, NH, Jacob Wirth of Burlington, VT, and Joseph, James and William Wirth of Sherborn, MA.

Visiting hours will be held at Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, Rutherford, NJ on Friday January 27th from 4-8pm
Funeral on Saturday 9am from Funeral Home for a 10am Mass to be celebrated at Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington, NJ.
Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Peace-Care St. Joseph’s in Jersey City or the Community of God’s Love in Rutherford.
