Obituary for Mary Eleanor Kulkens

Mary E. Kulkens (nee DeVries) 91, of Rutherford, NJ went home to heaven to be
with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 27, 2015. Diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease several years ago, she passed away peacefully at her own
home with her caring family by her side. She was born on December 2, 1923 in
Passaic, NJ to the late John J. and Nellie DeVries and grew up and lived almost her
entire life in Rutherford.
Mary graduated Rutherford High School in 1941. After graduating from
Passaic General Hospital as a Registered Nurse, she worked at the NY Eye and Ear
Infirmary. In August, 1949 she married the love of her life, William B. Kulkens,
and they enjoyed 66 wonderful years together. She became a stay-at-home loving
mother, after starting a family.
She was a Sunday School teacher and youth worker with the gathering of
Christians she attended in Passaic, NJ and later in Mahwah, NJ, where she
worshipped the Lord. She used her nursing skills as a volunteer camp nurse and
counselor at Christian camps. With a desire to see God’s wonderful creation
firsthand, she visited many places around the world with her husband. She was an
avid reader and especially enjoyed reading the Bible. “Unknown, and yet well
known” (2 Cor. 6:9), Mary was a remarkable person.
Mary is survived by her loving husband William B. Kulkens; her daughter
Barbara (Hawryliw) and son-in-law Greg Hawryliw of South Carolina; her
daughter Carol Kulkens and son William C. Kulkens, both of Rutherford; her
grand-daughters Karen Schmidt and Laura Sobieski and 5 great-grandchildren all
of South Carolina. Mary will be missed greatly by her family, fellow believers in
Jesus Christ, and friends who knew her.
