Obituary for May "Sis" Elliot

May "Sis" Elliot of Rutherford, beloved Mom, Nanny, Supernanny, and longtime Yankees fan, KIP Center strength class attendee, and bridge champion, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, February 18, 2022, at the age of 99.
Born in East Rutherford to Leon and Emma (née Scolley) Falicon, she grew up in a house full of brothers, one of whom introduced her to her husband, the late Douglas P. Elliot.

May spent childhood summers at her family’s beloved bungalow in Barley Point where she famously swam across the Navesink River. After graduating from East Rutherford High School (Class of 1941), May and a friend joined the war effort at Fort Monmouth. Whether she was there for the boys or for the work, we’ll never fully know. She earned a degree in drafting and later worked as a clerk at Supermarket Promotions.

May and Doug were regulars on the Rutherford High School sidelines, always supporting their children Glenn, Bonnie, Denise and Christine in their many pursuits. Both fans of being at the center of the action, their house was the local gathering spot.

May and Doug shared 60 years of marriage and hundreds of baseball games together (he a Mets fan, she a Yankees fan) before he passed away in 2007.

In her later years, May was an active member of the Rutherford Kip Senior Citizen’s center. Between weekly arobic classes, bridge with the Marbaises, and regular trips to Atlantic City, May kept a social calendar busier than most of her grandchildren until well into her 90s. Always a fan of the ocean, some of May’s favorite days were spent on the beach, a book and a deck of cards at her side and, more recently, sporting a fashionably large sun hat to keep her cool.

Her grandchildren adored her. She taught them to yell Hell’s Bells when the deck didn’t go their way and to seal their best moves with a wink. Each of her grandchildren kept their own pot of nickels at the Nanny’s house, at the ready for Sunday afternoon games.

She will remain in the hearts of her children; Glenn Elliot (former Rutherford Mayor), Bonnie Majka & partner David Wright, Denise Hayner & husband Tom, Chris White & husband Bob, 10 grandchildren; Matt, Michele, Shawn, Tommy, Danielle, Christine, Erica, Colleen, Meagan, Shannon and 13 great-grandchildren, leaving them with holiday memories of cards and forgotten crescent rolls, easter egg hunts, parties at the pool, summer days down the shore, and a joie de vive unrivaled.

Family will receive friends Monday 4-8 pm at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford. Funeral Tuesday in Funeral Home for 10am Prayer Service, Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery, Lyndhurst.

To honor May, donations would be greatly appreciated to 55 Kip Center, 55 Kip Avenue, Rutherford, NJ 07070
