Obituary for Patrick Joseph Higgins

Patrick Joseph  Higgins
Higgins, Patrick, age 85, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Rutherford, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on July 26, 2011. Born in Chicago, he graduated from St. Rita's high school and served in the Navy during WW11.

Patrick had a long career as an insurance executive in Chicago and New York City, specializing in life insurance and annuities for Continental Casualty, INA and AIG.
He and his wife Florence of 60 years, dedicated their lives to raising their eight children in Rutherford, New Jersey. In his retirement, Patrick was an avid gardener, canary breeder and painter of birds and natural settings. He enjoyed dancing, singing, telling stories and family celebrations. Throughout his life he embraced his Irish heritage and was full of blarney. Patrick cherished his friendships with his friends and neighbors in Rutherford and at Cedar Crest Village, and he always spoke proudly of his large, extended family.

Patrick was predeceased by his wife, Florence, in 2009. He is survived by his eight children and their spouses, Kathleen and Victor Steckler of Parsippany, N.J.; Patty Jo and Joe Gazdowicz of Sebastopol, Ca.; Brian and Karen Higgins of Upper Saddle River, N.J.; Mary Ellen Higgins and Ted Gonzalez of Verona, N.J.; Kevin and Maryellen Higgins of Randolph, N.J.; Barbara and Kevin McCallion of Daufuskie Island, S.C.; Sheila and John Bedard of Ringoes, N.J.; Tom and Stacey Higgins of Washington, N.J.. Grandpa will also be missed by his seventeen grandchildren: Eric, Maureen, Ellen, Anna, Adam, Tim, Conor, Molly, Seamus, Alana, Kaitlyn, Meghan, John, Kelly, Shannon, Elizabeth, and Ian.

Visitation will be held on Sat. and Sun., July 30 and 31, from 4-7 at the Collins-Calhoun Funeral Home,19 Lincoln Ave, Rutherford. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St Joseph's Church, East Rutherford on Monday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m.
