Obituary for Peter Stirling Van Winkle

Peter Van Winkle, 70, lifelong resident of Rutherford passed away unexpectedly at his home December 17, 2021. Peter was born to Robert and Elizabeth (nee Hands) Van Winkle. Peter was the 9th generation Real Estate Broker of A.W. Van Winkle & Co, the oldest real estate firm in the country.

Peter truly loved Rutherford and his passion for the community drove him to get involved with causes that would benefit the town and its residents. Peter served Rutherford in many capacities, including past Councilman, past President of the Chamber of Commerce, past President of Kiwanis Club, past Elder and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford.

He was highly respected and just an all-around great guy; a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Peter was the husband of Cynthia (nee Hargan) Van Winkle for 40 years. Five years ago, he became the proud grandfather of triplets and was over the moon with pride and joy.

Peter will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Cynthia, his son Robert and wife Kate (Baviello) Van Winkle, his grandchildren; Charlotte, Jack and Henry, his sister Claire (Van Winkle) Nichols and his niece Amanda C. Nichols.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary V.W. Hargan, sister-in-law Linda H. Bryant (Paul), nephew Graham W. Walton and niece Patience V.W. Bryant.

Arrangements will be Private.
