Professor John G. Dollar, formerly of Rutherford and the Fairleigh Dickinson University faculty, passed away peacefully in Cohasset, MA, on November 26. He was 91. Prof. Dollar, a beloved figure on the Rutherford campus, joined the FDU faculty in 1955 and taught both English and Humanities, as well as writing and directing several plays; an expert on the work of William Carlos Williams, whom he knew, Prof. Dollar retired in 1988 and was honored for his many years of service to the university by being named a Professor Emeritus and being elected to the school's Heritage Hall.

Prof. Dollar was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Muriel Hoogstraet Dollar. He was also pre-deceased by his brother William Dollar, who was among the first American male ballet dancers in New York. He is survived by his son Jerry and daughter-in-law Susan, their children Thomas, Emily, Clara, and Hana; by his son David and daughter-in-law Paige, their children Isabel and Evan; his daughter Margaret Mullaley and son-in-law Michael, their children Catherine and Rebecca; and his daughter Susan.
Prof. Dollar was born in East St. Louis, IL, in 1921. He studied at the Jesuit Seminary in Florissant, MO, and at St. Louis University, where he earned both an M.A. and Ph.L. Following his studies he joined the faculty of Webster College (MO), where he met his future wife Muriel; they were married in St. Louis in 1951. The Dollars moved to Rutherford in 1955 and lived for many years on Vreeland Ave. and then on Ridge Road. Prof. Dollar was active in the Polytopic Club, the Becton Society, and the group working to create the Williams Center; he also served as President of the Friends of the Rutherford Public Library and made frequent appearances there giving readings and lecturing on a wide range of subjects. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and citizen of Rutherford

Funeral Friday: 11:00AM Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of Saint Mary, 91 Home Ave. Rutherford. Please arrive in Funeral Home 10:00AM

Family and friends will be received Thursday 4:00PM to 7:30PM in the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., Rutherford.
