Raul Wong, Sr., 84, of Kearny, passed away on Sunday April 5, 2020. Born to Leon Wong & Paulina in
Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba.
Raul married the love of his life, Sofia and recently they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they raised two children, Ileana and Raul.
Raul had a long accounting career in the banking industry. He initially worked for the Chinese American Bank upon his arrival from Cuba and retired from the European American Bank.
Raul is loved by everyone and will be fondly remembered as caring, genuine, generous, good-natured, kind, and selfless. He was gregarious, jovial, fun to be around, willing to try new things, always ready to spend time with family and friends, and “always going, going, going”. He was child-like in his excitement for cooking new recipes, collecting cooking gadgets, and a “techie” of his generation. He was dependable, as well as very organized and ingenious. He was also amazingly orderly and systematic with his spreadsheets, documents, his calendar, photos, and so many other things.
Raul will be dearly missed by his wife Sofia, his children, Raul & wife Joy, Ileana & Vicky, his grandchildren, Peter, Emma, Brandon and his sibling, Mercedes Wong. He is predeceased by his brothers, Jose Wong and Estanislao Wong.

To our treasured friends, Sofia, Ileana & Vicky, Raulito & Joy and Peter, Emma and Kai:

Among our saddest day was the day we learned of Raul’s passing. For we loved him, too. The Wongs became our next door neighbors in Union City, NJ in 1976. Soon, Ileana and Raulito became our very best friends. We were inseparable that summer. Ileana and I listened to music, did facials, received beauty tips from Sofia and ate, ate and ate again; while Raulito and my brother Juan Greg hung out and explored.

We have a lifetime of fond memories, some of which stand out to attest to Raul’s generous spirit, kindness and sense of humor.

That summer, Raul kept us busy and entertained by taking us to the Rockland County pool in Nyack, NY, regularly. He would explain to my parents, that it was located straight on Rt. 9W. We still refer to it as the “9W pool”. Not only would Raul take us, but he would bring what was never anything less than gourmet snacks.

Another regular treat was that of music—once a week after work, Raul would bring to Ileana and me a list of music from which we would select ‘45 rpm records’ by the dozen. He would bring the latest sounds in time for the weekend. We would play them in Ileana’s “The Wedge” by Zenith—the coolest record player and speakers known at the time. Ileana and I would sit on the fire escape terrace and sing along to the Stylistics while Sofia fed us “batido de mamey” and “maripositas fritas” among other delicious snacks.

Then there was the time during one of my most vain periods as a teen, when Raul took us to play softball at the park under the G.W. Bridge. The sun was setting, and I missed the ball. It hit me straight on the mouth. My upper lip swelled to the point that it covered by bottom lip. I ensued to cry desperately mainly due to the thought of permanent disfiguration. Raul calmed me and assured me that the swelling would go down and that I would be fine. Later he added “no te preocupes que se te puede hacer sirugia plastica." We would laugh about this years later.

Lastly, I would like to mention that Raul and Sofia were my chaperones—yes, in good, old-fashioned Cuban tradition. Jorge and I met in 1977, and Sofia would chaperone visits after school. Raul and Sofia were at our wedding, baby shower, Isabel’s Baptismal, First Holy Communion and to those of Juan Greg’s children (my nieces and nephew) Angelina, John Gregory and Natalie.

I’m so glad that throughout the decades, we continued to see Raul and Sofia at family gatherings. It was always good to catch up about Ileana & Vicky, Raulito & Joy and the beloved grandchildren--Peter, Emma and Kai. The Wongs were by our side, on one of the saddest days of our lives, when we lost our dad and they lost a friend in 2011.

Raul, you personified what is good in this world. Thank you for enriching our lives. We will never forget you and always remember you lovingly. God bless you. Rest in peace.

Tus amigos, Juan Greg, Marlene & Jorge and tia Estrellita y tio Ramon.

Thank you so much for bringing those great memories to life. It was great having you guys as friends throughout our teenage years and even after we graduated college. I clearly remember the many times Juan and I rode bike to Hudson County Park as your mom sat patiently waiting until our safe return. I also remember the days Juan and I rushing to get the '22 Hillside' bus down to Hoboken to catch the Path early in our careers. I can't believe you still remember 'The Wedge'!

One thing I can share about Raul is that he always made us feel like family. “Y las nenas”, “y tu esposo?” He would ask each time I had the pleasure to see him...He was joyous, generous and kind. Raul was like a father to many of us and we loved him the same. In looking at all the precious memories on the photo wall, you can see the love that this special man shared with us all. We will miss spending time with here on earth but we believe he is in a peaceful place and that his heart and spirit will always be with you, his family. May God help you through this difficult time.
