Obituary for Robert J Jefferys

Robert Jerome Jefferys, 77, of Rutherford , passed away on Tuesday, July 9th. He was born in Jersey City , NJ , to the late Edward and Anna (Curley) Jefferys.

Robert perished from a broken heart after losing his beloved wife, Dorothy, 5 months ago to a difficult battle with MDS cancer. Although doctors believe his stage 4 bladder cancer was responsible, we will respectfully disagree!!! They were married for 46 years and met on a blind date through friends. During which, Dorothy knew he was ‘the one’.

Robert served our country in both the Army, with the 2nd Armored Division, nicknamed Hell On Wheels; and in the Air Force, as a Russian Language Specialist during the Cold War. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in European History from the University of Maryland in 1963. His commencement speaker was LBJ, a mere 5 months before he became president. He became a stockbroker/Certified Financial Planner and began his career with Goodbody & Company on Journal Square , Jersey City . He was known by his customers to be honest, fun-loving, and straight-forward. After a successful and gratifying career of 38 years, he retired from Morgan Stanley in 2004.

Robert was involved in his community of Rutherford , serving on the Community Chest and The Town Council. He was very active in the town’s baseball league, the Rutherford Baseball Council League (RBCL). He coached a number of teams and leagues in town, as well as managing the umpires for all leagues. He was involved in one of the early traveling youth baseball leagues in Bergen County (Jr. American Legion) before it was fashionable, and helped manage the town’s American Legion baseball team. He was a proud disciple and very knowledgeable in his Catholic faith and practiced what he preached on a daily basis - he was a Defender of the Faith. He taught 6th grade CCD for over 10 years, and was a member of the St. Mary’s Parish Council. Robert was an active member at St. Michael’s parish in Lyndhurst , who embraced all social events.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Jill Marie, and sons Robert Vincent and Edward Taylor, Ed’s wife Nicole, his grandchildren, Allison Elizabeth and Colin Taylor, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his brother, Edward, and sisters, Evelyn and Gertrude.

The funeral will take place on Friday, July 12, at 9:00am at Collins Calhoun Funeral Home – 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford – followed by a 10:00am Mass of Christian Liturgy in St Michael the Archangel RC Church, Lyndhurst. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery , North Arlington .

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 11, from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:30-9:00pm.
