Obituary for Thomas Richard Butler

BUTLER
Thomas Richard, age 70, of Wayne, passed away peacefully at home, on Thursday April 5, 2012, after a lengthy and valiant fight against cancer. Born in Jersey City and raised in Hoboken, he was also a 38 year resident of Rutherford, NJ and had resided in Wayne for the past eleven years. “Tom” was predeceased by his parents James and Mary Butler, formerly of Hoboken, NJ. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth, “Lee”, Butler (nee Kirby), of 45 years, who held his hand as his took his final journey to meet his Lord. A devout Catholic, Tom, lived longer than all had predicted and expected, giving credit to his strong faith in God. He is also survived by his two children, Shawn Butler, and daughter-in-law, Xiomara Butler, of Acworth, GA, and daughter Michele and son-in-law, Scott Stekler, of Glen Rock, NJ. Preceding his illness, Tom had worked in retail sales for most of his career and had served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Tom also had the invaluable and loving support of many family members including, John Kirby, Robert and Barbara Kirby, and Gerald and Ann Kirby. He also had many beloved nieces and nephews.
Most importantly, Tom lived for his two grandsons, Zachary and Lucas Stekler, who both miraculously came into this world at the time of his initial diagnosis. His love for them provided an even stronger will to live and battle his illness. They were fortunate enough to have the best “Pop Pop” that two grandchildren could ever ask for. Regardless of how weak or ill he felt, even towards the end of his time with us on Earth, Pop Pop would muster the energy to get up and give them a kiss and hug goodbye. Zachary and Lucas’ gift to their grandfather was a cat named Mr. Peabody (“Pio”) who also provided him with unconditional love for the past several years. It was at Tom’s insistence that “Pio” be mentioned in his obituary, highlighting the importance of his presence in his life.
Tom will be remembered by us all on a daily basis, until we meet again in heaven, which is already resonating with the music of “Frank Sinatra”, as he is welcomed into his final resting place. Finally, free of pain, and full of song.

Funeral Tuesday 8:30AM from the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home 19 Lincoln Ave. Rutherford followed by 9:30AM Mass of Christian Liturgy in The Church of Saint Mary, 91 Home Avenue, Rutherford.

Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, No. Arlington
