Obituary for Thomas W. Reid

Thomas W. Reid, 69, of Rutherford, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021. He was born in Scranton, PA, to Thomas J. and Phyllis (nee Eggleston) Reid. The Reid family settled in Rutherford when Tom was seven years old. He continued to live and serve the Rutherford community for the next 62 years.

Tom proudly served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, enlisting in 1971 and honorably discharged in 1977. After his military service, he attended Bergen Community College receiving an associate degree in Computer Programming. After college, Tom joined the Rutherford Police Department. In addition to his duties as a police officer, he used his programming background to implement computer technology to the RPD for the first time. He loved being in law enforcement and ultimately retired as a Lieutenant, after 32 years of service. Tom spent most of his time during his retirement with a camera in his hand. He was a wonderful photographer, who enjoyed capturing moments in sports, nature, and taking portraits for friends and family. Tom was an extraordinary man, husband, and father; a great storyteller, often talking about his many life adventures; a generous soul with the heart of a lion.

Tom will be deeply missed by his wife Mary (nee Lanni) Reid, his son Thomas A. Reid, sister-in-law Carolyn Harding, and many nieces and nephews, as well as the Lanni family. He is predeceased by his parents, his 3 sisters: Phyllis Rogers, Lucille Hoffman, Barbara Riordan and his brother Michael Harding.

Family will receive friends Tuesday 12/28/2021 from 3 to 8pm in the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave, Rutherford. A Marine Corps. Honor Guard presentation at 7pm. Private cremation.

At the request of the Reid family, it is kindly requested that you wear a mask during visiting hours.
