Obituary for Vera E. Gray

Gray, Vera E. (nee Fattorini) 93, of Rutherford, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 7, from complications from a stroke that she had two years ago.
Born July 11, 1917 in Nanticoke, PA, the daughter of the former Joseph and Lena Fattorini (nee Dubiak), she married Arnold Gray in 1936, to whom she was married for 44 years until his death in 1980. They moved the following year to Newark. At the height of the Great Depression, she worked in Grant's and the American Can Company. She and Arnold moved to Nutley and then Kearny before settling in Rutherford in 1948 where she gave birth to her only child, Thomas. She was a homemaker for many years becoming an expert in knitting, sewing and baking. She knit for the Seaman's Institute in Brooklyn, NY, providing scarves and hats for those men. In the ‘60's, she became social editor of the South Bergen News, a position she held until moving to an accounting position at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She graduated from FDU in 1976 with BA in Accounting, and she continued to work there until she retired in 1987. Vera was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Rutherford, where she was Chairman of the Women's Evening Guild for many years. She also was ordained a Deacon and Elder of the church, acting as the Clerk of Session for several years. An avid bowler, Vera participated in many leagues, first at Arlington Lanes, and later at Wallington Lanes. She continued bowling until she had her stroke at age 91. Vera is predeceased by her brothers, Angelo and Lee, and her sister, Rose. She is survived by her son, her brother, Joseph, and her sisters, Mabel and Ida, along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive guests at the Collins-Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford, on Friday, October 15 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, One East Passaic, Avenue, Rutherford, on Saturday, October 16 at 11 a.m. A reception to remember and celebrate Vera's life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Vera's name to the Music Fund of the First Presbyterian Church.
