Obituary for Vincent A. Matthews

Vincent A. “Red”, 86, of Rutherford set sail for calmer seas surrounded by his family on September 21, 2013. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Raymond and Theresa (nee Bernardo) Matthews. Vincent was proud to have served in the US Navy during WWII from 1945 to 1946 on the Battleship USS IOWA “BB-61”. A member of its Veterans Association, he often traveled to attend reunions with his shipmates. Raised in Lyndhurst, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, then began his career in Floor covering, first as Manager of Churchill’s Carpets in Lyndhurst and then for 24 years as Director of Operations with Einstein Moomjy in Pine Brook, NJ. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Rutherford, American Legion in Lyndhurst, Little Red School House with the Lyndhurst Historical Society, Harmonica Club, and Commodore 64 Computer Club.
Vincent is survived by his loving wife Barbara (nee Roeder). He was the proud father of Laura Matthews & partner Avinash Bawa of Lyndhurst, Linda Hughes of Marietta, GA, and Nancy Zwemmer & husband Kees of Rutherford. He adored his six beautiful grandchildren, Ricky, Sonia, Madeline, Grace, Maxwell and Jasper. He is predeceased by his brother, Rodney Mathews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, September 28th at 11:00AM in Grace Episcopal Church, 128 W. Passaic Avenue, Rutherford, NJ 07070. Arrangements made by the Collins Calhoun Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford NJ
