A day with Danny

Dear Farrell Family, I am very saddened to hear that Danny has passed away. I will always remember Danny from a wonderful day we spent going to a Mets game together. We got the train from Rutherford on a roasting hot July day. He was excited because he told me it was only the second time in his life that he had taken a train and he passed the trip to Seacaucus with his face pressed right up against the window looking out over the meadowlands (I wouldn't be surprised if his imprint is still on that pane of glass). On the subway he was enthralled by the views out over Queen's from the elevated train. He was so interested he wouldn't hold on to anything (no matter how many times I suggested it), so every time the train stopped he'd go flying forward, only to quickly take his place back at the window. The game started with us in the nosebleeds on the third base side. It was everything you'd hope for, especially when Mike Piazza hit a game-winning home run to shut up the loud-mouth behind us who'd been annoying Danny by giving Mike a hard time the whole game. Danny was used to going to games with his dad, so he thought you had to leave in the 8th inning to beat the traffic but instead we stayed to the end to celebrate the victory for a moment. We started down the stairs from the top of the stadium, but with Danny it had to be a race so I soon had to go faster and faster jumping more and more steps at once to keep up with him. We got our train from Queen's to Port Authority, both now tired and engrossed in our magazines (Men's Health for Danny of course). We finally got back to Rutherford around midnight, where I think his Pop was about to call every emergency department between Flushing Meadows and the Meadowlands looking for him, though not that Danny could see why he was worried! That was as simple and happy a summer's day you could ever have and it was an honour to spend it with Danny. Liam
