Memories of Ma Conway

She was, without question, one of the sweetest people it was ever my privilege to know. For the Essex Catholic Drama Club class of 1976, we called her Ma Conway. And she was a "Ma" in the best sense of the word. Kindly. Comforting. Understanding. I had the hubris in my senior year, to take Trigonometry - as an ELECTIVE, because I thought it might be fun. 10 minutes into the first class, I knew I was in trouble. A failing grade was 65. I deserved a 30, at best. Yet, Ma gave me a 67 and I passed. A few years after graduation, we were at a party at Pauline Stankewicz's, and Ma was there. I asked her, "Ma, how did I pass trig? I was terrible at it." And she said, "While I was teaching I saw the information fly right over your head! I didn't have the heart to fail you. Besides, your forté is in the arts!" She was a lovely woman. In class, she would say, "Trig can be fun! Use colors in your diagrams!" Although my favorite was, "Gentlemen, drop your diagram in the second quadrant, and move out!" Well, Ma has moved out. Goodbye, Ma, you were an amazing woman with as generous a spirit as I can ever expect to know. And, thank you for the 67, it spared me more grief at home than you could ever know!!
