Long Ago

I knew Patty and Billy more than 50 years ago when we all lived in an apartment house at 2961 Hudson Boulevard, later renamed Kennedy Boulevard, right at the beginning of Journal Square. Wow, that’s more than 50 years ago, yet I still remember Patty so clearly. My mom, brother and I loved talking with Patty who of course always had the children with her. We often talked for a few minutes in the small courtyard near the apartment building’s side entrance. Patty was special. My mother loved talking with her because there was always a good laugh somewhere in the conversation. In 1961, I was in high school and I loved President Kennedy, and Patty would always ask me the latest news on JFK. Patty always listened and I always felt special because she was so interested. The Regans moved one day to Rutherford and we never saw them again. But a year ago, I was bringing Communion to the sick in the Emergency Room at Hackensack Hospital. A man sitting at a patient’s bedside asked me where I grew up. I said Jersey City, and he said, “Did you know the Regans, Patty and Billy? “Did I know them?” I said in reply. “It was so long ago and yet I remember them and their family with great affection.” There are people who come into your life who you never forget throughout your own lifetime. I was thinking today that now that God has called Patty home, to be with Billy and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. West, all of us have someone special to pray to in heaven, and for sure Patty will listen.
